The Roanoke Island Inn, July Special!

July Special!

By Lauren Borland

One of our favorite things about being innkeepers is welcoming guests who are eager to start their beach vacations. We see them climb out of their cars, stretch from the long drive, take their first deep breaths of salt air. They gaze over the marsh and to the gentle waters of Shallowbag Bay and the Roanoke Sound. They see the charming boardwalk and lighthouse and take in all the quaintness our little water town has to offer.

May is here and SUMMER is just within reach! The chilly weather of early Spring is gone and sunny and 75 are the new normal here in Manteo and on the Outer Banks. May is a wonderful time to visit and soak up the pre-summer fun! One of the most anticipated weekends of the year is Bluegrass weekend, May 15th-18th, 2019, when the sounds of violins, fiddles and bangos take center stage in Manteo.

Spring and Easter are just around the corner and that means it is time for SPRING BREAK! Those with kids out of school looking to take a family getaway, or if you just want to take a Spring escape to our salty shores, the Outer Banks offers an unbelievable blend of fun and education! Obviously our area is known for having some of the best beaches on the East Coast, but we are also home to some amazing history.

The Roanoke Island Inn, Closed for the Season

Closed for the Season

By Lauren Borland

Even though we closed our doors for the 2018 season a few weeks ago, things haven’t exactly slowed down around here! We plan to be closed for January and February, reopening March 1st for the 2019 season. Everyone warned us the two months would fly by, and boy were they right! We cannot believe we are almost half way through our “break”. Here is what we have been up to so far:

It doesn’t take much to switch gears into the Holiday season, and with all due respect to Thanksgiving there are already a few christmas trees up here at 305 Fernando St. We have traded in our swimsuits for sweaters and as much as we love the summer months, the holidays have always been a special time of year for us and a special time to visit the place we now call home in the Outer Banks. So enjoy the turkey and oyster stuffing this week and then join us in all of the other Holiday events from Corolla to Hatteras!

The Roanoke Island Inn, Halloween…. Manteo Style!

Halloween…. Manteo Style!

By Lauren Borland

We may have packed up all the ghosts and jack o lanterns, but we’re still drowning in Halloween candy over here on Fernando Street. The kids had an absolute ball, and if you have never experienced Halloween in Downtown Manteo, it is really something to see! There are so many things going on, we did not make it everything…but here is a run down of our very first Halloween in paradise!

A Scary Amount of Activity Kicks Off Halloween on the Outer Banks

After a long, hot summer, we didn’t think it would ever cool off here in Eastern NC. But alas, the temps have finally cooled, the sea oats have started to lose their seeds, golden rod is in full bloom, and even though we don’t have a ton of leaves, we get our fall colors in the vibrant sunrises and sunsets that Autumn brings. Yep, Fall is (finally) in full swing on the OBX and Halloween is right around the corner! The last weekend of October is jam packed with fall fun.

Cloudy Beach Walks

As is typical with a hot, sticky summer in the south, we have had some soggy days around here the past few months. While the area in general and my flowers specifically need a little rain now and then, occasionally we get a bit more than asked for. Jason and I had our first look at “hurricane protocol” this July and what goes into to protecting our slice of paradise when threatening weather approaches. Even though what we experienced this July was not a hurricane, in some ways it was worse.

The Roanoke Island Inn, Manteo?

Manteo?

By Lauren Borland

When people call the inn looking for information, 2 questions are asked more than any others.

1 - How do you pronounce Manteo? Is it Man-tay-oh? Man-tee-oh? MAN-teo? I am unsure what is actually correct, but visiting here my whole life and now living here among the locals and natives, it is Manny-o.

Now that we have cleared that up, the next question requires a bit more explanation:
