The Manteo House, locally referred to as the Evans Family Homeplace, is a beautiful home in the heart of downtown Manteo that has a unique blend of original 1871 elements such as wooden flooring, doors, window frames, and transoms, while also being complemented by custom Honduran mahogany in its extended wings. The House was initially constructed for John Wesley Evans and his wife, Rosa Brinkley Evans; the property remained in the family for 150 years and was host to many Roanoke Island legacies. Over the years, The Manteo House has been a home to our island's first school house, numerous weddings, church engagements, the business community and political events.
There are many spaces to relax in private, like the parlor, den, or expansive porches that overlook the Manteo Sound. Grab a rocking chair and enjoy the grounds or take a stroll around the town. Explore the town steeped in history. Manteo is full of shops, restaurants, and generational locals who are excited to share stories and tips for your visit.
