Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is the only place in the world where endangered red wolves exist in the wild. To learn more about the endangered red wolf, the Red Wolf Recovery Program and to hear them howl, attend a howling. Howlings are held June through August on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Reservations are not required. Bring a flashlight and insect repellent. Summer howlings are $10/person with children 12 and younger going along for free. Reservations are required. Free off-season howlings are held periodically. In 2018 the free dates are on April 14 at 7 p.m., May 12 at 7:30 p.m., October 13 at 6 p.m., November 10 at 4:30 p.m. and December 15 at 4:30 p.m. Meet at Creef Cut Wildlife Trail parking lot, at the entrance to Milltail Road, about a 20-minute drive from Manteo on U.S. Highway 64.
