Shrimping in the sound is a fun activity for all ages. You'll not only learn a great deal about the marine ecosystem, but also get to keep and eat your catch. Capt. Barry Sweitzer offers shrimping charters on the 40' Hallie M out of Wanchese Marina. Capt. Sweitzer and a mate take up to six passengers out for trips on the sounds around Roanoke Island, where you'll see a variety of wildlife and beautiful scenery. They pull a shrimp trawl through the water, then the passengers sort through the catch to harvest shrimp, fish and crabs. Everything of legal size is yours to keep. Charters run three times a day Monday through Friday, and each trip lasts 3.5 hours. Just about everything you need is provided, including a fishing license, gloves, water and ice. You'll need to bring a cooler for your catch, plus snacks, drinks, sun protection, non-slip shoes and a tip for the mate. Reservations are required.
